FAQs

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about our BA (Hons) Buying & Merchandising course.

The BA (Hons) Buying & Merchandising degree develops the strategic, commercial and leadership skills needed for a career in fashion buying or merchandising. Over two years, you'll explore the entire product lifecycle, from trend research and product development through to retail strategy and business performance. Topics include fashion buying and merchandising principles, trend forecasting, range planning, sustainability and supply chains.

Many students combine the BA (Hons) Buying & Merchandising degree with part-time work, particularly in fashion retail. The accelerated two-year degree is intensive, so you'll need to balance your studies carefully, but there is time outside your scheduled teaching for part-time employment. We also encourage students to gain industry experience wherever possible, helping them build commercial awareness and strengthen their CV while studying.

The BA (Hons) Buying & Merchandising degree is assessed through a range of coursework and practical projects, rather than traditional written exams. Assessment methods are designed to reflect the work you'll complete in industry and include live industry projects, presentations and pitches and research projects.

These assessments allow you to demonstrate both your academic, theoretical understanding and your practical commercial skills.

Industry engagement is a key part of all Fashion Retail Academy degrees. We work with more than 250 fashion and retail brands, giving students regular opportunities to build professional networks throughout the course.

You'll benefit from:

  • An industry mentor who provides guidance and career support (subject to eligibility)
  • A work placement each year with one of the FRA's partner brands (subject to eligibility)
  • Live industry projects set by our brand partners
  • Guest lectures and masterclasses from industry professionals
  • The YOU 2.0 Assessment Centre Bootcamp, helping you prepare for graduate recruitment and connect with potential employers

These experiences help you develop valuable industry contacts before you graduate and increase your confidence when applying for buying and merchandising roles.

The BA (Hons) Buying & Merchandising degree at the Fashion Retail Academy includes practical business maths, but it isn't a maths-heavy course. Instead of advanced calculations, you'll use data to make commercial decisions, forecast demand, plan stock levels and manage budgets. These analytical skills are taught through real fashion business scenarios, helping you build the confidence to make informed buying and merchandising decisions.

A GCSE in Maths at Grade 4/C or above is required to ensure that you have the foundational maths skills required for a career in buying and merchandising.
