Our fashion visual merchandising course explores what it is to be a visual merchandiser, how you can drive sales through product placement and become an extension of a brand’s identity.

Throughout the course, you'll master a wide range of digital and design skills for visual display and branding. You'll learn to create dynamic physical and digital assets for omnichannel retailers, from window displays to social media content, as well as develop trend forecasting and digital design skills to support your ideas.

It's suitable for school or college leavers, career changers and anyone with a passion for branding, retail design and customer experience. You don't need any previous visual merchandising experience, just creativity, enthusiasm and the required entry qualifications. 

The Level 4 Visual Merchandising for Fashion course at the Fashion Retail Academy (FRA) is primarily creative, but with a strong commercial focus. It sits between design and retail business, teaching you how to create visually engaging spaces that also drive sales and enhance the customer experience. 

Throughout the course, you'll develop the creative and commercial skills needed to become a visual merchandiser. You'll learn how to design physical and digital retail spaces, create window displays and visual concepts, use creative software including Adobe Creative Cloud, produce planograms, and understand retail architecture, store layout and customer experience. 

The Level 4 Visual Merchandising for Fashion course is built around practical, industry-focused projects that help you develop your creative and professional skills. During the year, you'll work on projects such as: 

  • Designing visual merchandising concepts for fashion brands. 
  • Creating window display and retail space proposals.  
  • Developing planograms and in-store merchandising layouts. 
  • Responding to live industry briefs set by leading fashion retailers.  

Previous projects have been set by brands including Alexander McQueen and H&M, giving students experience of working to real commercial briefs. These projects also help you develop teamwork, time management and presentation skills. 

Level 4 Visual Merchandising students can apply for the Placement Pathway through our Future Pathways Programme. Eligible students have the opportunity to complete a three-week, full-time work placement with a fashion brand, gaining valuable industry experience and insight into the workplace. Placement opportunities are competitive and subject to qualifying criteria. 

Visual merchandising students who don't take part in a placement can join the Employability Pathway, which includes recruitment workshops, networking events, an industry project and support from recruitment specialists to help prepare for employment after graduation.
